Continuing Education: Forced Meditation
An introduction to therapeutic rock climbing for mental health professionals.
Service Description
Participants will learn how to integrate the sport of rock climbing into their practice via a multitude of established therapeutic modalities, including: MBCT, IFS, CBT, somatic experience, TF-CBT, narrative, somatic experience, and more. The techniques and approaches can serve many populations, including: anxiety, depression & mood D/O, panic, relationship issues, self-esteem, OCD, addiction, ADHD & executive functioning issues, couples & families, and more. Participants will learn specifically how to use taught exercises to serve these populations. Participants will also learn the fundamentals of beginner rock climbing, specifically including safety-oriented techniques. Issues related to confidentiality and privacy are also discussed. Target Audience: Social Workers After attending this course, participants will be able to explain how to integrate interventions from a variety of modalities into the sport of rock climbing; participants will be able to explain how this integration can be clinically beneficial to a variety of populations. Participants will be able to assess eligibility of patients as well as contraindications, and will be able to describe the means by which therapeutic climbing can be beneficial to certain patients and specific mental health conditions. Participants will also be able to list mental health conditions appropriate for the use of therapeutic climbing as an intervention, and will also be able to list and cite studies and research in support of therapeutic climbing as a clinical intervention. Noah Carroll, MSS, LCSW is a therapist in private practice. A graduate of the Master's program at Bryn Mawr College, Noah has been a practicing therapist since 2011 and a rock climber since 2007. He is a powerful, dynamic speaker, who brings his genuine humanity to his work. Course Agenda: 10:00am: Welcome and introductions. Conflict of interest disclosure. Warmup and ice breaking exercises. 10:15am : Overview of course contents 10:45am: “My story – how climbing saved my life.” 11:15am: Overview of concepts: therapeutic frameworks, populations served. 12:00pm: Specific modalities & interventions 1:15pm Break 1:45pm: Integrating learned interventions into practice 3:15pm: Review of safety and safety equipment 3:30pm: HIPAA and privacy 3:45pm: Closure and discussion and feedback Includes: refreshments, course, certificate, 2 hours of beginner climbing training with Reach instructors following course, and access to the gym.
